Chulalongkorn Day 

Chulalongkorn Day (National Holiday Pattaya) or in Thai as “Wan Piyamaharaj Day” this national holiday is celebrated annually on October 23rd commemorating the Death of King Chulalongkorn, otherwise, known as King Rama V. He was the fifth ruling monarch from the Chakri dynasty. The present monarch King Maha Vajiralongkorn is the X ruling monarch from the Chakri dynasty to best understand the changes in the monarch from the past to the present. Since he died in 1910, he is remembered for the monumental changes he brought to the country leading the way to the future of Thailand as it is today. 

King Rama V

King Rama V is remembered as the country modernizing monarch. His greatest achievement was the abolition of slavery in Thailand. Before putting an end to slavery, it is said that as much as a 3rd of the Thai population had been enslaved.

Among his other accomplishments, King Rama V introduced other social and political reforms, including the creation of the country’s modern administrative structure into provinces and districts. During King Rama V reign the country switched from the lunar calendar to the Gregorian calendar used in the west. With the change much of the country is still using the Buddhist year, both are welcome. Other major reforms in the areas of the Thai educational system, military affairs, State Railway, and Slave Liberation Act without bloodshed in Thailand.
