Located close to the Global Top development Paradise Ocean View Condominium is one of the most intriguing attractions in Pattaya. Prasat Satchatham or the Sanctuary of Truth is one of the most iconic structures on the Pattaya skyline. The colossal wooden structure is designed and built similar to the old buildings of the Ayutthaya era over four hundred years ago. The architecture also evokes many Khmer influences as well as traditional Thai building methods.
The building is over 105 metres high and is occupies a grand 2 rai of land, the Sanctuary evokes Khmer architecture displaying hand-carved wooden sculptures indicative of the imperial setting at Angkor. It has four gopura representing images from the Buddhist and Hindu religions and mythologies of Cambodia, Thailand, India and China. Every single part of the structure of the Sanctuary of Truth is made out of wood, no nails have been included. The building is also highly embellished with magnificent wood carvings and not even cement has been utilised. Every significant joint in the walls, roof and sculpture and put together with wooden pegs and bolts.
The owner took the task of building the Sanctuary of Truth to: “Act as a reflection of the Ancient Vision of Earth, Ancient Knowledge and Eastern Philosophy. Within this complex, visitors will understand Ancient Life, Human Responsibility, Basic Thought, Cycle of Living, Life Relationship with Universe and Common Goal of Life toward Utopia.”
Construction is still taking place and when you visit the Sanctuary you will be required to wear protective safety headwear. Although building started on the Sanctuary in 1981 there is continuous repair work on the structure due to its location. The Sanctuary of Truth is situated in one of the most beautiful places in Pattaya, Rachvate Cape at Tumbon Naklea. Although the sea views are outstanding the building has to suffer the salt air and the strong Thai sun of the seaside.
On first arrival to the site you can take a walk around the small zoo and see the animals, then travel by horse drawn carriage to actually go and see the building. It is worth giving yourself plenty of time to view the magnificent Sanctuary, but once this has been achieved there are many other attractions to keep the whole family entertained. Elephant riding, dolphin shows, traditional Thai performances, food and drink stalls and many more. The Sanctuary of Truth is truly a must see attraction when in Pattaya as there is nowhere quite like it anywhere else in the world. The awe at seeing true craftsmen at their work doing something the same way it has been done for centuries. It makes the visitor humble but at the same time enlivened with the whole experience.
