One of the beauties of Pattaya is that there are many great islands just of the coast that are just waiting to be discovered by both tourists and residents alike. The largest and nearest is Koh Larn or Coral Island, and it is ideal for a day trip or even a long weekend. Situated slightly to the west of Pattaya, Koh Larn is just over 7km away from the city. By travelling that far away from the urban conurbation, you can progressively see the water getting clearer and clearer. When you arrive at the island the water is deep blue and crystal clear.
Getting to Koh Larn is easy, there is a regular ferry that departs from Bali Hai pier and takes around 45 mins. If there is a group of you then taking a speedboat is a good option as it is much quicker and will take you to the exact place you want to go on the island.
“Gotland” as the Thai’s pronounce it, is a charming island. During the peak season it can get a little busy with day charters, but if you are prepared to explore a little then quieter beaches and restaurants are easy to find. Koh Larn offers a choice of beaches, small restaurants and even accommodation which is very moderately priced. Be aware that once the last ferry departs the island is very quiet, which for most visitors is its beauty. The mountainous island is 4km long and 2km wide and is home to around a thousand residents. It is famed for its wonderful diving and diverse marine life.
There are at least 6 beaches on Koh Larn: Ta Waen, Thong Lang, Sangwan, Thien, Samae, and Nuai. Ta Waen beach is the most famous and popular and has a 750m long golden sandy beach with many sun loungers available for hire. Here you will find the most tourists and everything to cater for them, from food vendors to water sport activities. Towards the northeast of Koh Larn in Thong Lang beach, this is far more tranquil and superb for snorkelling or diving due to the abundance of coral situated here. Thien beach is on the west coast of the island facing out to the Gulf of Thailand, it is a large beach roughly 500m long. With a couple of restaurants and a few sun loungers it is ideal to laze the day away.
There are a few medium sized resorts but most of the accommodation on Koh Larn is of a smaller more budget type. Although you can find guesthouses and small hotels dotted all over the place most are centered around the main village facing back toward Pattaya. The Bee Orchid is one of the few hotels that offers a swimming pool, and is right next door to one of the very few bars on the island. Nightlife is not what Koh Larn is about, but there are some great seafood restaurants that the visitor can relax with a glass of wine or two. Xanadu Beach Resort is situated just steps away from Samae beach and is extremely popular. During the day the colourful resort is good fun, and in the evening enjoy a cocktail or two in the lounge. The Global Top Group’s projects are all in easy reach of Koh Larn, it is one of the great advantages of choosing Global Top as your prefered developer.
