Imagine a sky full of man-made stars, waters of fire and flowers and the release of all negativity, in a nutshell – that’s Loy Kratong!
An annual event that pays homage to the Water God. This takes place the during the full moon , this year the 22nd November, the 12th month of the Thai year.
Loy Krataong literally translates to ‘float a basket’, derived from the age-old practices of creating decorative flowered floating baskets illuminated by a lighted candle which are then released to gently float down the river or away with the ocean tide. These specially designed baskets are known as krathrongs, hence the name of the festival. Traditionally, krathrongs are designed from banana trunk pieces to ensure buoyancy
The significance of these is a symbolic release of negativity in your life, anger, hate or any other negative emotion that may burden you.
Kong loy or flying lanterns and fireworks are also an integral part of the festivities.
Locals and visitors alike are enthralled by the sheer delight of setting the baskets afloat; usually done as one makes a wish.
Watching the krathrongs & lanterns float away is an exciting experience, especially for first-time visitors. The sight of thousands of flickering lights, drifting away in the air and water, pushed by the gentle breezes in the calm of the night is a breathtaking experience.
The rooftop gardens of Global’s’ projects are ideally removed from the fray and allow for relaxed gazing of the spectacle of the flying lanterns. Beaches are never further than six minutes from any Global Top project, should you care to Krathong!! When in Rome, launch one of your own.
